Sweet Baby Mine Pdf is a Psychological Adult Fiction novel By Maria Daversa. Set in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, Sweet Baby Mine is an adult coming of age tale about the collateral damage left behind when a marriage fails spectacularly. Told in real time and from the perspectives of the two main characters: Ana and Tony, the story documents the toll secrets, lies, betrayals, and mental illness can have on a couple who once believed they’d found in each other true love. The tale is brutal, oftentimes heartbreaking, but always hopeful as it never deviates from its message. On the road to self-discovery, you will eventually learn that no matter what anyone says—no matter what flawed message you believed about yourself growing up, you are a good person and deserving of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartbreaking but beautiful story about dysfunctional love

Sweet Baby Mine is a story about secrets, love, mental health, and damaged people trying to make their way through life and the toll it takes on those around them. Together, these elements form a tale that is raw, that is beautiful, that is heartbreaking, and most of all, that is honest.

Early on, the book sets the scene, promising the rescue of the protagonists’, Ana and Tony, estranged daughter, Chloe. From who, or from what, is a mystery that is revealed as the story unfolds. It then shifts back to the days leading up to this rescue, where it becomes clear that while this rescue sets the characters down their narrative path, it is their stories that form the novel’s true narrative.

This is a literary story told from two very different perspectives, those of Ana and Tony. Written in the first person, each chapter swaps between these characters, telling their sides of a dysfunctional marriage between someone with borderline personality disorder and a narcissist, each of them harbouring secrets with the potential to destroy their marriage.

The two couldn’t be more different from one another; they are chalk and cheese, with needs and wants that are miles apart from the other’s. The author’s use of the first person provides stunning insight into the characters. Where many books could be written in any perspective, Sweet Baby Mine had to be written in this perspective with the two narratives to tell its story and enable the reader to gain a full understanding of the characters. Both characters are far from perfect and has each made their mistakes. Both are beautifully realised, and the reader can’t help but feel for and care about them.

The author’s experience as a clinical psychologist, along with other experts she consulted, has paid off: Ana’s personality disorder is raw and feels completely honest. Through her narration, the reader understands her way of thinking. Likewise, the toll this takes on Tony is portrayed beautifully, while his narcissism takes its own toll on Ana. Between the pair, their personality disorders collide while also feeding off each other, creating a perpetual loop they find themselves stuck in.

Largely, the remaining characters in the novel serve to flesh out the plot and its emotional poignancy. They are written well, but this is not their story; it is Ana and Tony’s. We see the impact the supporting characters have on the protagonists’ lives, and we see how Tony and Ana relate and react to them, but the focus is squarely on Ana and Tony. While this could result in the side characters feeling underwritten, here, it works to the book’s advantage, allowing it to maintain its focus without diluting the story.

The prose is clean and clear, and establishes the novel’s world beautifully. As it features characters who have moved to Paris from the US, the author has injected French words and phrases into the prose which adds character to the world. Likewise, the dialogue is easily digestible. The characters have distinct voices and the conversations all feel authentic, adding to the book’s honesty.

While the book builds a mystery around Chloe’s rescue, it is not a fast-paced book. Nor does it feel slow; it methodically moves the story forward, revealing more about the characters as it progresses. I struggled to pull myself away from Sweet Baby Mine; each chapter beckoned me to read the next.

Sweet Baby Mine tells an expertly crafted story about its characters. As it reveals more about them and the secrets they are hiding, and provides more detail about their marriage and lives together, it paints a stunning picture. At times heartbreaking, this book is a thing of beauty. More than a novel, it is an experience that needs to be read.

This is an unusual book: both illuminating and empowering. It is not a fluffy romance, pink and sweet. The story takes us on a journey into the life and mind of someone with personality disorder issues, but it is done with skill, sensitivity and above all, compassion. Maria Daversa has obviously written this with extensive knowledge of her field and has combined it with an adroit weaving of both Tony and Ana’s viewpoints that makes for a rich, layered experience. Maria’s writing forced me to be part of the story. Though I felt Ana’s pain, I felt Tony’s as well, but I also saw the essential gentleness of Ana and her sense of luminous wonder and empathy as shown by the bird incident. Bit by bit, as I understood them, as the layers were unfolded, they became real to me, and I became their invisible champion. At the end of the book, I realized that I also had imbibed much needed understanding into a condition that mentally imprisons thousands, if not millions around the world. By writing this book, Maria Daversa has done a great service by giving a voice to those who hide in the shadows because they are not understood. This is a book that should be read because, with our understanding, the shadows must disappear.

This book touches on topics of mental health, drug abuse, family secrets, and dysfunctional families. I’ve never read a book with a character who had BPD before, but I can tell the author has an extensive knowledge of the subject and did her research!

The story is told from the POV of two characters in a dysfunctional marriage. Both husband and wife are very flawed individuals. They keep secrets from each other, and they don’t always make good choices. I wondered if their marriage would survive by the end or if they would call it quits. (I won’t spoil the ending.)

Throughout the story, there are mentions of their daughter, Chloe, who has been away for years and is in trouble now. The mother and daughter have a strained relationship, and I was eager to see if they would for reunite and heal their relationship. Overall, I think this is a well-written debut from Maria Daversa!
