Stray Cat Blues Summary
When twelve-year-old Frankie steps onto his boat, Max Plank has no intention of helping her find her lost big sister. He’s looking forward to a well-deserved vacation. His plan includes nothing more than a little fishing, a bit of fooling around, and a whole lot of hammock time.
Little does he know that this small, cute, skateboarding time bomb will lead him into a mystery with a tangled web of secrets and lies involving small-time hoods, powerful gangsters, corrupt politicians, paranoid hippies, and most dangerously, his long-time nemesis, a twisted casino operator at the heart of the city’s criminal trade.
As Max races to untangle the convoluted case and find the little girl’s sister, the mayhem and dead bodies pile up. Finally, he realizes that the only way to get the whole truth involves risking his own life. But for Max Plank, this is just the price of admission to the game he’s decided to play.

Stray Cat Blues is a very enjoyable read. Lots of interesting characters. I read a lot of murder mysteries, but I didn’t even come close to guessing whodunit until the murderer was revealed. Hope to read lots more by this author.

After a whole, something about the plot started to feel familiar. We will probably meet several of the people involved in later tales, so I mention them here. A dubious casino owner. called Poe, sends a young orphaned girl, Frankie, to our protagonist when her older sister Johnnie disappears.
Max, living on a houseboat, is a somewhat unprepossessing investigator, who survives challenging small and larger criminals and in the end, no surprise, we find out not only that Johnnie is dead but also how she died. Max just happens to have a very rich, powerful friend, Marsh, who knows how to fight…hm, this begins to sound familiar: Harlan Coben’s series about Myron Bolitar with his rich pugilistic friend Winchester.
Marsh, however is gay, and Max has a skittish girlfriend, Alexandra, who travels a lot, but in between they all discuss the case. At the end of the tale, after Frankie learns her sister is dead, Alexandra hints that she might consider marrying Max if that means they can keep the girl.

Stray Cat Blues is the first novel in the Max Plank series by Robert Bucchianeri. The series is new to me, but there are three novels in the series. A fourth mystery is due soon. The author hooked me with the first page of the novel. It was John D. MacDonald presenting Travis McGee straight out of The Deep Blue Good-by. Plank’s home is a 42-foot houseboat by the name of Acapella Blues. That was all I needed to know.
Max Plank is not a private investigator, but he does like to snoop around when needed. In this novel, the need comes from a 12 year old girl looking for her older sister who is also her guardian.
I never give many details about the plot, since I think that spoils the surprises in a novel. This book has a few left turns, a few right turns, and the finale is worth the journey.
I am happy that I found this series. I am going to get into the second novel, The Ties That Bind, as soon as possible. Thanks goes to Mr. Bucchianeri for an extremely well written introduction to the series.

Not a dull paragraph in this one. Lots of readers gush about “page-turners” but this book really is! If you like mysteries this one will leave your mind bone weary trying to figure it out, trying to tie the clues together. Just when you think you have it all figured out…surprise! You don’t. Try again…right up to the last chapter. Don’t miss a wonderfully written and engaging story.
