Snowflake, AZ Pdf Summary

Ash gets on a Greyhound bus to the place Bly was last seen: Snowflake, Arizona. Six thousand feet up in the wide red desert, Ash meets Mona; her goat, Socrates; her dog, Cooper; and finds stepbrother Bly, too.

In their ramshackle homes, the walls lined with tinfoil, Mona and her neighbors are all sick. But this isn’t any ordinary sickness: modern life has poisoned them, and when Ash too falls ill, the doctor’s response is, “It’s all in your mind.” Meanwhile, as Ash lives through a cycle of illness and recovery and loss, the world beyond is succumbing to its own affliction: a breakdown of civilization only distantly perceived by Ash and the isolated residents of Snowflake, from which there may or may not be a chance for recovery. This humane and thoughtful novel is about resilience, trust, family, and love, when all seems lost.

I’m actually a member of the Environmentally Ill (EI) community in Snowflake, AZ, so I began this novel with some trepidation to see how our illness and the community would be portrayed. But I needn’t have worried, because–while this is very much a work of fiction–Sedgwick portrays Environmental Illness with great compassion, showing the impact of a poorly-understood (but very real) illness that isolates the characters from the larger world to a small community in rural Arizona.

But “Snowflake, AZ” has much greater ambitions than simply being an exposition of illness. Sedgwick uses the experiences of his EI characters to frame a provocative philosophical and scientific narrative about the state of mankind and what we’re doing to the planet. It was really cool to see ideas that have interested me, like mind-body medicine, tribalism/in-group-out-group dynamics, the role of bacteria in our health and behavior, etc. incorporated into a story that is both entertaining and has a bigger message. I read mainly non-fiction, where the communication of ideas is more direct, but this makes me realize how effective fiction can be for communicating big ideas, and what a special talent it takes to pull that off.

Ash (nicknamed Snowflake) is the narrator, a teenager in a simple and aimless life. He doesn’t have much of a family, but he follows a clue to find his stepbrother who is living in a small isolated community of people suffering with overwhelming physical illness. Soon, Ash realizes he also has symptoms. I did not find the writing style immediately engaging and I was turned off by Ash’s lack of worldliness and vocabulary. But soon I was hooked and appreciative of his lack of “overthinking.” I liked when he came up with his own description of his condition: “I have ‘undiagnosis.'” The people he meets all have ideas not only about causes of their symptoms, but about how society creates, treats, justifies, and analyzes our human condition. Give this novel a few chapters to grow on you.

He is the author of several books, including Witch Hill and The Book of Dead Days, both of which were nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award. The most recent of these nominations rekindled a fascination with Poe that has borne fruit here in (in The Restless Dead, 2007) the form of “The Heart of Another” – inspired by Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Of his story, Sedgwick says, “This was one of those stories that I thought might be a novel originally but actually was much better suited to the tight form of the short story. I had the initial idea some years ago but was just waiting for the right ingredient to come along. Poe’s story, as well as his own fascination with technique, provided that final piece of the puzzle.”

He used to play for two bands namely playing the drums for Garrett and as the guitarist in an ABBA tribute group. He has published novels such as Floodland (winner of the Branford Boase Award in 2001) and The Dark Horse (shortlisted for The Guardian Children’s Book Award 2002).
