Nine Princes in Amber pdf Book Characters

The Machiavellian royal family of Amber is headed by Oberon, the former king, now absent. His five daughters are Florimel, Deirdre, Fiona, Llewella, and Coral (who doesn’t come into play until book 9) but the major players of the novel are the nine princes of the title:

  • Benedict. The oldest surviving prince, uninvolved in the current struggle for the crown, he is the master tactician of the family and a man who seldom smiles. He is presumed to be dead by the rest of the family.
  • Corwin. The protagonist. A cross between a cruel rogue and a reluctant poet, his years on Earth seem to have softened him somewhat: “And remember who it was who gave you your life where another would have taken it”.
  • Eric. The arrogant yet competent would-be king of Amber; he commands the loyalty of Julian, Caine and Gérard.
  • Caine. Calculating and realistic.
  • Bleys. Dashing and charming; Corwin’s other ally in his fight against Eric.
  • Brand. Like Oberon, mysteriously unavailable.
  • Julian. A sinister hunter.
  • Gérard. Physically strongest of the nine, affable and liked even by his enemies.
  • Random. A sneaky rascal albeit Corwin’s ally. A gambler and the youngest of Oberon’s children.

Roger Zelazny author Nine Princes in Amber pdf Book made his name with a group of novellas which demonstrated just how intense an emotional charge could be generated by the stock imagery of sf; the most famous of these is A Rose for Ecclesiastes in which a poet struggles to convince dying and sterile Martians that life is worth continuing. Zelazny continued to write excellent short stories throughout his career. Most of his novels deal, one way or another, with tricksters and mythology, often with rogues who become gods, like Sam in Lord of Light, who reinvents Buddhism as a vehicle for political subversion on a colony planet.

The fantasy sequence The Amber Chronicles, which started with Nine Princes in Amber, deals with the ruling family of a Platonic realm at the metaphysical heart of things, who can slide, trickster-like through realities, and their wars with each other and the related ruling house of Chaos. Zelazny never entirely fulfilled his early promise—who could?—but he and his work were much loved, and a potent influence on such younger writers as George R. R. Martin and Neil Gaiman.

He won the Nebula award three times (out of 14 nominations) and the Hugo award six times (out of 14 nominations). His papers are housed at the Albin O. Khun Library of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

I read this years ago in college and decided to reread the series recently. It’s a nice easy-to-read book that doesn’t go too high fantasy but definitely has plenty of world-building elements in it and hints at themes of family, destiny, and politics. So it’s a quick read that even non-fantasy readers can enjoy.

I particularly love the beginning, starting in the mundane world. Zelazny does a great job blending fantasy and reality and an extraordinary way of writing a character with no memory bluffing. I almost wish the first book had stayed here longer!

I think you’d find it very unsatisfying to stop here so if you don’t need another series, you might avoid it, but as I remember you can stop at the first five books and they are all pretty short quick reads.
Overall a great book that I’m sure I’ll reread a third time someday.

I grew up reading Nine Princes in Amber pdf bookalongside my brothers, sister and parents. As soon as we graduated from Narnia and The Book of Three, we were reading Zelazny with the grown ups.
In some ways, Nine Princes is a template of the amnesiac protagonist who experiences the facets of a sci-di world through the eyes of a newbie and then reclaims his memories and the true struggle begins. The Artificial Kid and Matrix are echoes of this work. Really looking forward to collecting all of the Amber series on Kindle. Only request would be to have access to the original 70’s artwork. I like the new cover but it would be cool if I could replace the icon with the original paperback format cover.

Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber pdf book series is one of my favorite series. Frustratingly, due to issues involving his estate after he passed away, it was not in ebook form for many years. I’ve been done with paper books now for at least a decade. I was so delighted to find it when I made my irregular check to see if it was in ebook form. I promptly bought book 1 (this book).

It’s a great story with wonderful characters, fantastic and imaginative settings, and great emotion-evoking scenes and dialog.
This is masterful story telling.

In my mind, Zelasny stands shoulder to shoulder with the greats like Asimov and Heinlein, mostly on the strength of the Amber series. The world he describes in the Chronicles of Amber is deep and richly detailed, with characters who are are engaging and relatable. I suggest reading them in order, simply for the context it would provide. But read any of them, they are great stand alone stories in themselves. So walk the pattern, see what incredible world it leads you to. It won’t be dull, guaranteed.
