About Richard Wagner Author Of My Life -Volume 1 Pdf Book

Richard Wagner
Richard Wagner

Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 – 13 February 1883) Author of My Life -Volume 1 Pdf  was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, “music dramas”). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Initially establishing his reputation as a composer of works in the romantic vein of Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer, Wagner revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama. He described this vision in a series of essays published between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).

Much tedious minutae, but still interesting given the author. The often casual references to now famous works of his is interesting. Absolutely no description of his compositions. The ongoing chaos of his day-to-day personal life makes the creation of such extraordinary works all the more remarkable. Of course, as with all autobiography, approaching with healthy skepticism is advised.

Don’t let Wagner’s reputation for grand darker works (and prejudices) make you think that he is stuffy or dry. This book is actually very funny. A boy dealing with parents and getting into mischief …. I was surprised at how conversational and colloquial the book was. It is witty, and easy to read (obviously this is a translation). He was an interesting kid. Smart, but not some isolated ethereal wunderkind. I found myself liking him a lot.

I really enjoyed this book. Why did I think it might be boring? It is not at all boring, just a fascinating look at how life was lived in the nineteenth century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Example of a Celebrity Autobiography

I came to this book not without some trepidation. As an admirer of Wagner’s music dramas, I equally am well aware of some of his dark side: his egotism, feuds and racism. As a prose writer he also has the reputation for being tedious. Yet as this volume was free, I decided to take the plunge, and sample what he has to say for himself.

Though I can see signs of the egotism, and perhaps certain rambling qualities in some of the prose, this first volume of autobiography is actually very readable and lively. One could see this as an example of nineteenth century celebrity autobiography, by someone who had a deeply fascinating personality including in its faults. Yes, it is possible to get the impression Wagner thought he was always right and brilliant. But he was not unique in that. Many autobiographies can be seen as exercises in self justification, and settling old scores. And maybe, maybe, he had more justification than most for being conceited, given his legacy to music and theatre which I would say is huge. But this this belies my fears and is very readable. Also to be fair, he does acknowledge debts owed to teachers and admit to mistakes he made, and what setbacks taught him.

What we get here is a lively, and even racy, telling of Wagner’s early life though rumour has it that he did keep quiet about some of his love many affairs as the work was dictated to his formidable second wife, Cosima. In this volume we hear how Wagner came to love the theatre, his studying music and events up to the time when he was forced to leave France. There are interesting asides on his creative process. For example the early Symphony in C was influenced by Beethoven’s Eroica as much as by the Seventh Symphony. Wagner is also a lively chronicler of social mores of the time, and gives interesting portraits of people he met along the way, not just the famous ones.

All in all, this is easily the most readable of Wagner’s writings, and it is very readable. If you want to know the man first hand this is the place to go. A must for all Wagner fans and those interested in the history of music in the nineteenth century.
