Mister Memory brings to light a profusion of intriguing philosophical questions about the role of memory, the origin of the self, and how consciousness shapes our identity. Observations and proclamations made by characters on these subjects are the source of the book’s greatest merit.

The author makes use of neurological disorders not often found in books, providing a distinctive protagonist. And an omniscient narrator who addresses the audience with comedic and lyrical asides gives the narrative some much-needed pizzazz.

Marcel Després is presented as the main character, but a significant portion of the book is dedicated to following Laurent Petit – a young inspector with a penchant for following clues whose intuition propels him on a perilous search for truth.

Though the story premise incites reader curiosity, the book disappoints in terms of plot pacing and structure. Many revelations are delivered too soon, revoking the narrative of a sense of surprise or suspense. Several moments of clarity are based purely on character speculation, divesting readers of investment in the story. A plot twist delivered midway through the book feels unprecedented, seemingly dispatched for the author’s convenience. The premature revelations, speculative nature of “what really happened,” and the author’s decision to invest minimal time exploring the book’s most interesting character collectively castrate the book’s potential to be a thrilling mystery.

I am not sure which came first, David Baldacci’s ‘Memory Man’ or this book, but the idea of a man with a comprehensive and infallible memory must have been inspired by one or the other. I have not read Baldacci’s book so I am not certain how he creates his character, but Sedgwick’s Marcel Despŕes is a fascinating character. A man who remembers everything he sees (and not see – for he remembers what it was like in his mother’s womb) and recalls everything to its smallest detail.

Then he is charged for the murder of his wife but is sent to an asylum instead of standing trial. Who committed him to the asylum, and why? A young police inspector tries to find out. The psychiatrist in the asylum stands in his way, initially, but later becomes his ally. They discover that the murder was not what it seems. A big scandal is being hidden. A scandal that will threaten the lives of all three men.

Sedgwick keeps the reader riveted to the book from beginning to end, and there are twists aplenty. The many fascinating characters who appear, who are the villains, and who the heroes? This is a detective story laced with philosophical questions about consciousness and ethics. It is also a marvelous story of inevitability of fate.

MARCUS SEDGWICK Author Of Mister Memory pdf Book was born and raised in East Kent in the south-east of England. He now lives in the French Alps.

He is the winner of many prizes, most notably the 2014 Michael L. Printz Award for his novel Midwinterblood. Marcus has also received two Printz Honors, for Revolver in 2011 and The Ghosts of Heaven in 2016, giving him the most citations to date for America’s most prestigious book prize for writing for young adults. Other notable award winning books include Floodland, Marcus’ first novel, which won the Branford-Boase Award in 2001, a prize for the best debut novel for children published in the UK each year; My Swordhand is Singing, which won the Booktrust Teenage Prize for 2007, and Lunatics and Luck, part of The Raven Mysteries series, which won a Blue Peter Book Award in 2011.

His books have been shortlisted for over forty other awards, including the Carnegie Medal (seven times), the Edgar Allan Poe Award (twice) and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize (four times). He has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award three times, in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Marcus was Writer in Residence at Bath Spa University for three years, reviews for The Guardian newspaper and teaches creative writing at Arvon and Ty Newydd. He has judged numerous books awards, including the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the Costa Book Awards.
