Mentored in Fire (Demon Days, Vampire Nights World)

Mentored in Fire (Demon Days, Vampire Nights World) is Paranormal Vampire Romance novel by k.f. Breene. It tells the story about Reagan a young woman fighting for her independence in a world of magic.

Mentored in Fire (Demon Days, Vampire Nights World) Summary

After a life of hiding and laying low so as not to end up trapped in the Underworld, that’s exactly where Reagan finds herself.

It could be worse, though. She could’ve had a hostile father as her jailor instead of a man eager to teach her magic. She might’ve been trapped with someone other than the steadfast Druid.

She could’ve gone her whole life without riding a dragon!
When push comes to shove, maybe the Underworld isn’t so bad.
Or maybe Lucifer is doing what he does best – deceiving her to get what he wants.
Reagan must walk a razor thin edge to keep her independence.
She must battle wills with the lord of the Underworld.

While this book had a slightly different feel to some of the others, maybe due to a fair chunk being from Penny’s point of view, it still knocked it out of the park. Reagan is now in the Underworld with her dear old dad, learning more about her magic while shadowed by the druid, Cahal. Pretty much all of the book is set here as Reagan is trained by her father and gets to know him and his realm better. Oh, and there’s dragons! YAS!

While there wasn’t too much going on after the heart attack that was the last book, it certainly stands up on its own as Reagan develops more of a relationship with Lucifer, torn between wanting to leave him to have her freedom and being drawn to him and genuinely liking him and the quirkiness that is his kingdom. While Reagan is in the castle with Cahal and testing her magic, Darius, Penny and Emery are on Team Rescue, on a mission to save Reagan or risk losing her forever – there are several, longer chapters focussing on their story along the way. Darius’ long-laid plans, networks and cunning laid out through the Edges in the Underworld may finally come to fruition as they attempt the unachievable: access to the Inner Kingdom. But of course, nothing can ever be that easy and as Penny unintentionally wreaks havoc, throwing a spanner into carefully laid plans, the trio are left running for their lives and desperate to save their friend/beloved. The sects from the Dark Kingdom crop up ranging from violence to pleasure and it was a great ride (excuse the pun) from beginning to end.

As per usual, the characters in this series were fantastic. Reagan was business as usual, being the perfect mix of strong female, kicking life goals (literally) while also showing a good amount of character development and some vulnerability, especially as she came to terms with losing her mother and actually liking her father. Penny’s character showed massive growth and added so much to this book. I’m talking proper swear words and finding a backbone and her lady bone..er lol. I felt she went from being a bit scatty and naïve to coming more into her own as a powerhouse. Emery was as yummy as always, taking more of a backseat to Penny who moved to centre stage, but still great as per usual. And Darius? A firm all-time favourite of mine, he can do nothing wrong and while I would have liked more of him, particularly dialogue-wise, I ate up every page he was on, loving his continued devotion to Reagan. We finally get a teeny bit more of vulnerability from him and the lengths they went to to reunite was perfect.

The secondary characters were, as always, wonderful. Just as Lucifer was a standout in the brief cameos readers were given in previous books in this series, Mentored in Fire was no different. He was manipulative, funny, diabolical, charismatic, enigmatic and just an all-round big cup of deliciousness. The reader gets to meet various demons of the Dark Kingdom, particularly those close to Lucifer, which added some great dimension to the story. Having the dragons show their own personality was a brilliant touch that made them stand out from some other paranormal books and they will be a fantastic addition to the next book as well, I’m sure. One of the best characters, however, was Cahal. We get to see even more of him in Book 10 and he’s just fabulous, both as a support to Reagan and as the kick-butt killer. Pleeease let him have his own book.

While the book did have a different feel to it due to the focus of the story being on Reagan’s development of her magic and her relationship with her dad, it still managed to shine in all the areas this author does so well and what makes this series one of my all-time favourites. It was laugh out loud funny in parts without being over the top and as per usual, the dry sarcasm, witty banter and both light-hearted and serious dialogue were balanced perfectly. Reagan demanding to be called ‘Her heinous’ was a particular stand out. I flipping love Reagan – she’s what I want to be when I grow up. There was action, particularly towards the end where my heart was in my throat, only for the author to try to tear it out. The book had some really lovely, heartfelt moments that you don’t always get in this series but were highly appreciated here, as several characters had moments of reflection. As Reagan’s loyalties started to twist as she realised how much she actually does belong in and love the Underworld, the author had me guessing right up to the end (hook, line and sinker, may I add). I should have remembered that with K. F. Breene, things aren’t always what you expect before she kicks you in the guts and takes off running in a different direction. Much like Penny would lol.

My only slightly negative thing to say so it doesn’t seem like I’m gushing too much adoration at the author is the same thing I’ve said for some of the other books – there was a fairly large chunk of the story told from Penny’s point of view. While I loved it and appreciated that the other characters’ story was being told and it let me hang with Darius for a bit…I’m just greedy for Reagan. I want allllll the Reagan, alllllll the time. While necessary, sometimes I felt like I was pushing through the Penny chapters just to get to Reagan…which I probably was. This is only a minor thing, though, and if Penny’s point of view wasn’t in there, I’d probably be writing that here instead lololol. Reader problems – le sigh.

One of the things I always mention with this author’s books is how the women support other women. This really shone here as Penny and Reagan’s friendship flourished even though they were apart. The connection between all of the main and secondary characters was a beautiful thing to read. This author has a gift for taking similar themes that are woven throughout her books and making them radiate and become part of the story rather than having them seem tired, overdone and no longer funny. The worst thing about these books is having to wait for the next one. The fact that the next book is the final installment for Reagan is already giving me anxiety lol. This was another outstanding read in one of my favourite series. Now how many times will I get to reread it before the last book is out? Probably a few 🙂
