Macbeth Summary Act I

In the Book Macbeth pdf, amid thunder and lightning, Three Witches decide that their next meeting will be with Macbeth. In the following scene, a wounded sergeant reports to King Duncan of Scotland that his generals Banquo and Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, have just defeated the allied forces of Norway and Ireland, who were led by the traitorous Macdonwald, the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth, the King’s kinsman, is praised for his bravery and fighting prowess.

In the following scene, Macbeth and Banquo discuss the weather and their victory. As they wander onto a heath, the Three Witches enter and greet them with prophecies. Though Banquo challenges them first, they address Macbeth, hailing him as “Thane of Glamis,” “Thane of Cawdor,” and that he will “be King hereafter”. Macbeth appears to be stunned to silence. When Banquo asks of his own fortunes, the witches respond paradoxically, saying that he will be less than Macbeth, yet happier, and less successful, yet more. He will father a line of kings, though he himself will not be one. While the two men wonder at these pronouncements, the witches vanish, and another Thane, Ross, arrives and informs Macbeth of his newly bestowed title: Thane of Cawdor. The first prophecy is thus fulfilled, and Macbeth pdf, previously skeptical, immediately begins to harbor ambitions of becoming king.

King Duncan welcomes and praises Macbeth and Banquo, and Duncan declares that he will spend the night at Macbeth’s castle at Inverness; Duncan also names his son Malcolm as his heir. Macbeth sends a message ahead to his wife, Lady Macbeth, telling her about the witches’ prophecies. Lady Macbeth suffers none of her husband’s uncertainty and wishes him to murder Duncan in order to obtain kingship. When Macbeth arrives at Inverness, she overrides all of her husband’s objections by challenging his manhood and successfully persuades him to kill the king that very night. He and Lady Macbeth plan to get Duncan’s two chamberlains drunk so that they will black out; the next morning they will blame the chamberlains for the murder. Since the chamberlains would remember nothing whatsoever, they would be blamed for the deed.

Macbeth Summary Act II

While Duncan is asleep, Macbeth stabs him, despite his doubts and a number of supernatural portents, including a hallucination of a bloody dagger. He is so shaken that Lady Macbeth has to take charge. In accordance with her plan, she frames Duncan’s sleeping servants for the murder by placing bloody daggers on them. Early the next morning, Lennox, a Scottish nobleman, and Macduff, the loyal Thane of Fife, arrive. A porter opens the gate and Macbeth leads them to the king’s chamber, where Macduff discovers Duncan’s body. Macbeth murders the guards to prevent them from professing their innocence, but claims he did so in a fit of anger over their misdeeds. Duncan’s sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee to England and Ireland, respectively, fearing that whoever killed Duncan desires their demise as well. The rightful heirs’ flight makes them suspects and Macbeth assumes the throne as the new King of Scotland as a kinsman of the dead king. Banquo reveals this to the audience, and while skeptical of the new King Macbeth, he remembers the witches’ prophecy about how his own descendants would inherit the throne; this makes him suspicious of Macbeth.

Macbeth Summary Act III

Despite his success, Macbeth, also aware of this part of the prophecy, remains uneasy. Macbeth invites Banquo to a royal banquet, where he discovers that Banquo and his young son, Fleance, will be riding out that night. Fearing Banquo’s suspicions, Macbeth arranges to have him murdered, by hiring two men to kill them, later sending a Third Murderer, presumably to ensure that the deed is completed. The assassins succeed in killing Banquo, but Fleance escapes. Macbeth becomes furious: he fears that his power remains insecure as long as an heir of Banquo remains alive.

At the banquet, Macbeth invites his lords and Lady Macbeth to a night of drinking and merriment. Banquo’s ghost enters and sits in Macbeth’s place. Macbeth raves fearfully, startling his guests, as the ghost is visible only to him. The others panic at the sight of Macbeth raging at an empty chair, until a desperate Lady Macbeth tells them that her husband is merely afflicted with a familiar and harmless malady. The ghost departs and returns once more, causing the same riotous anger and fear in Macbeth. This time, Lady Macbeth tells the visitors to leave, and they do so. At the end Hecate scolds the three weird sisters for helping Macbeth, especially without consulting her. Hecate Instructs the Witches to give Macbeth pdf false security. Note that some scholars believe the Hecate scene was added later.

Macbeth Summary Act IV

Macbeth, disturbed, visits the three witches once more and asks them to reveal the truth of their prophecies to him. To answer his questions, they summon horrible apparitions, each of which offers predictions and further prophecies to put Macbeth’s fears at rest. First, they conjure an armored head, which tells him to beware of Macduff (IV.i.72). Second, a bloody child tells him that no one born of a woman will be able to harm him. Thirdly, a crowned child holding a tree states that Macbeth will be safe until Great Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Hill. Macbeth is relieved and feels secure because he knows that all men are born of women and forests cannot possibly move.

Macbeth also asks whether Banquo’s sons will ever reign in Scotland, to which the witches conjure a procession of eight crowned kings, all similar in appearance to Banquo, and the last carrying a mirror that reflects even more kings. Macbeth realizes that these are all Banquo’s descendants having acquired kingship in numerous countries.

After the witches perform a mad dance and leave, Lennox enters and tells Macbeth pdf that Macduff has fled to England. Macbeth orders Macduff’s castle be seized, and, most cruelly, sends murderers to slaughter Macduff, as well as Macduff’s wife and children. Although Macduff is no longer in the castle, everyone in Macduff’s castle is put to death, including Lady Macduff and their young son.

Macbeth Summary Act V

Lady Macbeth becomes racked with guilt from the crimes she and her husband have committed. At night, in the king’s palace at Dunsinane, a doctor and a gentlewoman discuss Lady Macbeth’s strange habit of sleepwalking. Suddenly, Lady Macbeth enters in a trance with a candle in her hand. Bemoaning the murders of Duncan, Lady Macduff, and Banquo, she tries to wash off imaginary bloodstains from her hands, all the while speaking of the terrible things she knows she pressed her husband to do. She leaves, and the doctor and gentlewoman marvel at her descent into madness.

In England, Macduff is informed by Ross that his “castle is surprised; wife and babes / Savagely slaughtered” (IV.iii.204–205). When this news of his family’s execution reaches him, Macduff is stricken with grief and vows revenge. Prince Malcolm, Duncan’s son, has succeeded in raising an army in England, and Macduff joins him as he rides to Scotland to challenge Macbeth’s forces. The invasion has the support of the Scottish nobles, who are appalled and frightened by Macbeth’s tyrannical and murderous behaviour. Malcolm leads an army, along with Macduff and Englishmen Siward (the Elder), the Earl of Northumberland, against Dunsinane Castle. While encamped in Birnam Wood, the soldiers are ordered to cut down and carry tree branches to camouflage their numbers.

Before Macbeth’s opponents arrive, he receives news that Lady Macbeth has killed herself, causing him to sink into a deep and pessimistic despair and deliver his “To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow” soliloquy (V.v.17–28). Though he reflects on the brevity and meaninglessness of life, he nevertheless awaits the English and fortifies Dunsinane. He is certain that the witches’ prophecies guarantee his invincibility, but is struck with fear when he learns that the English army is advancing on Dunsinane shielded with boughs cut from Birnam Wood, in apparent fulfillment of one of the prophecies.

A battle culminates in Macduff’s confrontation with Macbeth, who kills Young Siward in combat. The English forces overwhelm his army and castle. Macbeth boasts that he has no reason to fear Macduff, for he cannot be killed by any man born of a woman. Macduff declares that he was “from his mother’s womb / Untimely ripp’d” (V.8.15–16), (i.e., born by Cesarean section and not a natural birth) and is not “of woman born”, fulfilling the second prophecy. Macbeth realizes too late that he has misinterpreted the witches’ words. Though he realizes that he is doomed, and despite Macduff urging him to yield, he is unwilling to surrender and continues fighting. Macduff kills and beheads him, thus fulfilling the remaining prophecy.

Macduff carries Macbeth’s head onstage and Malcolm discusses how order has been restored. His last reference to Lady Macbeth, however, reveals “’tis thought, by self and violent hands / Took off her life” (V.ix.71–72), but the method of her suicide is undisclosed. Malcolm, now the King of Scotland, declares his benevolent intentions for the country and invites all to see him crowned at Scone.

(Although Malcolm, and not Fleance, is placed on the throne, the witches’ prophecy concerning Banquo (“Thou shalt get kings”) was known to the audience of Shakespeare’s time to be true: James VI of Scotland (later also James I of England) was supposedly a descendant of Banquo.)

William Shakespeare the Author of Macbeth pdf book, was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”. His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire and was baptized on 26 April 1564. Thought to have been educated at the local grammar school, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he went on to have three children, at the age of eighteen, before moving to London to work in the theater. Two erotic poems, Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece were published in 1593 and 1594 and records of his plays begin to appear in 1594 for Richard III and the three parts of Henry VI. Shakespeare’s tragic period lasted from around 1600 to 1608, during which period he wrote plays including Hamlet and Othello. The first editions of the sonnets were published in 1609 but evidence suggests that Shakespeare had been writing them for years for a private readership.

Shakespeare spent the last five years of his life in Stratford, by now a wealthy man. He died on 23 April 1616 and was buried in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford. The first collected edition of his works was published in 1623.

IMO indispensable for new readers. The format is the text on one page, and selected words and translations opposite, with expanded notes found at the back of the book for further reading and context. Folger is reliable as always, although supposedly Arden is good as well, but I believe the format used there is text on every page with footnotes and translations found at the foot of the page, in contrast with the format here. Just an aside, the size of the book is a bit compact so make sure you’re okay with the dimensions listed.

Whatever edition one chooses, I believe there is no substitute for the written text when it comes to Shakespeare, as electronic versions often suffer from formatting problems and are just more difficult to use, especially when it comes to looking up references and definitions. I think Folger is the right place to start.

Two wolves tearing in pieces a man till his end. (Amazon Classics Edition)

Three sisters play with Macbeth, maybe they’re three witches that for their amusement, simulating being fate, tell to Macbeth not what will happen but what he as a man of power (not so secretly) wants. Or maybe they are only three old women and their witchcraft is in Macbeth’s head along with phantoms and voices of guilt that nobody else sees. I loved so much how a mad world (as a psychological wolf) and a supernatural world (as a magic wolf) overlap and crash to devour Macbeth pdf as if he were a simple snack of meat. Power taxes him more and more, and his king’s illness of madness is not uncommon in history, but rather seems a consequence and requisite in order to play with countless lives.

This Amazon Classics Edition has, as always, nice typography, design and formatting. The edition is not bothered by studies or other interruptions, just a succinct biography at the end. As so is perfect. The X-Ray function is useful but it has a couple of errors to polish: I found that each time I search for the entries for Macbeth or Macduff X-Ray takes me instead to Lady Macbeth or Lady Macduff.

Shakespeare is difficult because he uses words that we don’t use anymore, and worse, he uses words that we do use in ways that are very different from how those words are used today. The Folger Shakespeare Library provides a set of notes that makes it possible to understand the Bard’s challenging vocabulary.

The story of Macbeth is very dark. If your not familiar with it, it is the dreadful story of evil that resides within the good hearted man. The noble man, Macbeth, encounters the temptation of dark prophecy provided to him by witches. Guided by the dark ambition of his wife, Lady Macbeth, the good man becomes increasingly evil as he brings the prophecy about. It’s bleak and dark and wonderful. A truly excellent work of art.

Sir
Every play of William Shakespeare is unique. Macbeth and King Lear, Othello and Hamlet, are reckoned Shakespeare’s four principal tragedies. Lear stands first for the profound intensity of the passion; Macbeth for the wildness of the imagination and the rapidity of action; Othello for the progressive interest and powerful alternations of feeling; Hamlet for the refined development of thought and sentiment. If the force of the genius shewn in each of the work is astonishing, their variety is not less so. Macbeth himself appears driven along by the violance of the fate like a vessel drifting before a storm: he reels to and fro like a drunken man he staggers under the weight of his own purposes and the suggestion of others; he stands at bay with his situation;
and from the superstitious awe and breathless suspens into which the communication of Weird Sisters throw him is on with impious and bloody hand to tear aside the veil which hides the uncertainty of the future.The world is obliged to have four great tragedies from Shakespeare. They are Hamlet pdf, King Lear, Macbeth and Othello. Some say that Hamlet is number one, some say it is Macbeth and others opine that it is King Lear. But I find it is Macbeth which is the greatest tragedy of English Language.
It would appear that about 1601 Shakespeare lost his faith in the world. The light heartedness of his earlier plays vanished; the laughter died away from his lips, the Macbeth is product of this. His words, his imagery, his depth, his splendid language make this play great. It is tragedy of ambition, revenge.The art of Shakespeare is fully displayed in this drama.
The Penguin Shakespeare is supreme and it’s editor Mr Stanley Wells is authority on Shakespeare. The introduction is more than sufficient ,and paraphrase is good although it is not vivid.
As great art of his language I cite few examples from the book.
“Stars, hide your fires;
Let not light see my black and deep desires:
The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be,
Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see. “Macbeth act 1 scene 5 before murder.
” Macbeth. I ‘ll go no more:
I am afraid to think what I have done;
Look on’t again I dare not” after murder of king Duncan
Macbeth. ” I am settled, and bend up
Each corporal agent to this terrible feat.
Away, and mock the time with fairest show:
False face must hide what the heart doth know”
I cannot take more space and request readers they may relish the greatest of tragedies of William Shakespeare. I very strongly recommend the drama to readers. After reading only they would realize the enjoyment of this.

From what I remember A very great book. remember reading back in school somewhere in early 2000’s
could have been 1999. Left an image in my head too with a feeling. Loved it for that reason even though it was written in that old English lingo but I still liked it. Still have not read this book yet but I will read both at some point I promise.
