I really wanted to like this book, after hearing it was set in Melbourne, Australia. I thought yes, finally! Romance in Australia, we are here for it. I believe this was the author’s first book that they have written and I want to firstly congratulate them on what an amazing achievement! I hope I don’t come across as too critical with my review but these are my thoughts.
1. I think there was only one mention of a Melbourne street and a bridge, which I did have to google maps to confirm. I would never have known it was based in Australia and would have loved to have seen more nationally recognized landmarks mentioned
2. I really loved the premise, of what was going to happen and the potential of where it could go, it may have been a bit predictable but the idea was cute.
3. I love romance books with mixed POV. What I don’t like is books with POVs that go back 5 chapters to get the other main characters point of view from the previous 5 chapters. This happened here and it just didn’t add anything to the story at all. Maybe there could have been a constant mix of POVs from the main characters? But this just didn’t add anything and was a wild throwback when it came completely out of the blue.
4. Everyone went from 0 to 100 real quick. We went from talking to yelling so many times, there was no middle ground. The word “yells” was used 110 times in this book which was almost 5x a chapter. We need more variety.
5. Story consistency. So in the beginning, there is the whole house fire/murder. I’ve highlighted sections that just do not add up….. Also the inconsistency with the male MC and his family relationships?
In regards to the actual plot:
– If anybody has a “friend” like Hailey, drop them, they are the worst.
– Do people get put into an induced 6-week coma due to smoke inhalation? I’m not sure.
– The ending was wild, rushed and left me reeling.
