Island of the Blue Dolphins Summary

On San Nicolas Island, dolphins flash in the surrounding blue waters, sea otter play in the vast kelp beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, a girl named Karana spent eighteen years alone.

Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that killed her younger brother, constantly guard against Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. Her courage, self-reliance, and grit has inspired millions of readers in this breathtaking adventure.

As Smithsonian magazine put it: “For kids all over the country, reading the book in language arts classes, Karana is a powerful symbol of their growing independence. Through her, they can imagine themselves making their way in the world alone—and thriving.”

The story is a classic, and I never read this as a kid. I’ve seen the movie, if you don’t know this is based on a true story. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for that woman to live alone for 18 years. But I so wish to learn more about her. I guess that means this story really sticks with you after you read it.

This is the tale of survival, tradition, perseverance, and longing for connection. It’s both beautiful and haunting. I cannot imagine the loneliness… but also the connection to the island. A young girl is left behind when her tribe evacuate their small island in the Pacific. She was trying to save her brother, but ends up only able to save herself and some animal friends. She survives many years on this island as it’s only human inhabitant. She finds friendship and love in the strangest places and in beautiful ways.

I haven’t read this book in many years. It will always stand out as a favorite from my childhood. I still cried over the unfairness of death. I hope to read this story to my grandson one day.

My son has to read 30 minutes a day. We read this together and it’s a very good book. He got bored at times but overall he enjoyed the story. He’s 9 and he’s an avid reader and he said he wouldn’t read it himself but he enjoyed our reading it together.
