I’ll Be You Summary

As children, Sam and Elli were two halves of a perfect whole: gorgeous identical twins whose parents sometimes couldn’t even tell them apart. They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role.

But as adults, their lives have splintered. After leaving acting, Elli reinvented herself as the perfect homemaker: married to a real estate lawyer, living in a house just blocks from the beach. Meanwhile, Sam has never recovered from her failed Hollywood career, or from her addiction to the pills and booze that have propped her up for the last fifteen years.

Sam hasn’t spoken to her sister since her destructive behavior finally drove a wedge between them. So when her father calls out of the blue, Sam is shocked to learn that Elli’s life has been in turmoil: her husband moved out, and Elli just adopted a two-year-old girl. Now she’s stopped answering her phone and checked in to a mysterious spa in Ojai. Is her sister just decompressing, or is she in trouble? Could she have possibly joined a cult? As Sam works to connect the dots left by Elli’s baffling disappearance, she realizes that the bond between her and her sister is more complicated than she ever knew.

About Janelle Brown Author of I’ll Be You

Janelle Brown
Janelle Brown author of I’ll be You

Janelle Brown author of I’ll be You is a New York Times bestselling author of the novels PRETTY THINGS, WATCH ME DISAPPEAR, ALL WE EVER WANTED WAS EVERYTHING, THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE and the upcoming I’LL BE YOU. her books have been New York Times bestsellers and published in a dozen countries around the world. her novels tend to be page-turners with dysfunctional family relationships at their hearts; while her first two books were more satirical domestic dramas, her latest three are literary suspense. She is also very much a California writer, and her books are set across the state.

It took her several decades to get to novel-writing, though. She first started off as an essayist and journalist, writing for Wired and Salon in San Francisco, during the dotcom boom years. In the 1990’s, Janelle Brown was also the editor and co-founder of Maxi, an irreverent (and now, long-gone) women’s pop culture magazine. Her writing has also appeared in Vogue, The New York Times, Elle, Wired, Self, The Los Angeles Times, and numerous other publications.

Janelle Brown has spent fifteen years working on her novels, writing the occasional essay, and living in Los Angeles with my husband and two children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, but……

Really interesting story, well-written, as are all of Ms. Brown’s books. However, it is very clear she has two new favorite words: penumbra and anodyne. She uses both of those words REPEATEDLY. I hate that kind of sloppy editing. I’m just being picky, because it doesn’t distract from the story.

I can’t pinpoint why this isn’t 5 stars for me – lots of great things about this book: a pretty accurate portrayal of infertility (and the desperation that can come with it), interesting plot twists, characters you root for. Maybe it was just the surface level exploration of the relationships between the characters or the faux insightful lines sprinkled in here and there. All in all, very worth the read, just not a new favorite.

Very good sister story. Not quite as good as Pretty Things, but well written and characterized. Sam really grew on me, and I could relate to her. I did think the ending was a little anti-climactic and too neat, but overall, a nice read with good pacing.

JAE reads too much!
