This is the first book in the Blood and Ash series. Our main character, Poppy, is from Masadonia and is the Maiden who is supposed to remain untouched and pure. In Masadonia, there are mortals and Ascended. Ascended are usually the mortals second sons and daughters, chosen to “receive the gift of the gods” and become virtually immortal. Being the Maiden means that Poppy was chosen by the gods to usher in a new era of Ascended which are viewed as the elite in her world. The Ascended are the royals and nobility of Masadonia. However, no one is willing to explain how the Ascended are made and role Poppy will be playing in the next ascension.
We get a look at Poppy’s backstory. Her parents were tragically murdered by creatures called craven while trying to escape the capital with her and her brother. Her brother came out of this mostly unscathed but Poppy suffered several injuries during this attack. She ultimately survived but she and her brother were brought back to the kingdom to live with the Queen for a time, before being shipped to Masadonia for unknown reasons.
Back to present day…Unfortunately, being the Maiden also means being veiled, unable to speak to anyone other than her guards, Duke and Duchess who she lives with, and the Priestess she is supposed to be studying under. She isn’t allowed hardly any freedoms and there do not seem to be any perks. While all other mortals have the freedom to go where they wish, with whom they wish. Poppy has two permanent Royal Guards and is supposedly under heavy watch at all times. However, Poppy has managed to learn how to escape this and seek freedom where she can. She also has a lady’s maid or companion whom she may actually speak to named Tawny. Our male main character, Hawke, is new to Masadonia. He is a rise guard who comes with a lot of accolades from the capital and seems to be ranking up quite fast. Early in the book Poppy is out in the garden with one of her guards Rylan, when Rylan is shot with an arrow and killed. Hawke is conveniently chosen as Poppy’s new guard. It’s clear from the beginning that Poppy and Hawke have amazing chemistry and they are attracted to each other. Throughout this book it appears there are several attacks on Masadonia, presumably by a “rival” kingdom and person called the Dark One. It’s guessed that Poppy is the target. The Dark One either wants to kill her or kidnap her. It is not clear at this point. Luckily, Poppy’s longtime guard and Father like figure Viktor believed that she needed to be able to protect herself. So over the years he’s taught her hand to hand combat, and how to used various weapons including daggers, short swords and a bow and arrow. During these attacks she is able to help out and protect herself. At the last attack, Vikter is killed protecting her. At this point the Queen demands that Poppy returns to the capital for her own safety. Of course Hawke and a few other soldiers, including a new character Kieran who is a good friend of Hawke’s, are Poppy’s personal escort to the capital. Along the way there are multiple attacks and Poppy uses a gift she has to take away one of the dying soldiers pain revealing this information to Hawke. As the troop makes it to the town they are staying at mysterious things begin to happen. It is revealed that Hawke is in fact from the rival kingdom, Atlantia. In fact at the end of this book it’s revealed that Hawke is Prince Casteel Da’Neer of Atlantia and they plan on using Poppy as a bargaining chip to get back his brother who has been imprisoned by Poppy’s Queen.
