5.0 out of 5 stars Very good reading for 8 to 48 year olds

This is Mr Sedgwick’s wonderful new series of books for 8 years and up, about Raven Boy and Elf Girl’s enchanted exploits as they battle to save their world.
The humour and imagery sparkles, in this first book, Fright Forest; they say opposites attract and in this fractious fiendish, the in particular the interaction between Raven boy and Elf girl, an excellent example is hoping mad and to ease her tension she stamps on Raven’s foot, understandably Raven boy is upset and asks his `side kick’ why she did what she did; only to be told “Well, I’m cross, and I can’t very well stamp on my own foot, can I?” she replies. Not only do get imagery with this story but you are given `flavours and smells’ in the most literal sense. If you have particularly sensitive 48 year they may not like the concept of Raven boy and Elf girl being tied up in one scene, ready, in cauldron pot waiting to be cooked for Trolls to eat.

There is a great partnership here between the author and the illustrator Pete Williamson as he brings the characters and fiendish forest to life, watch out for the chilling killer kittens.
This book really sets the pace with a get go narrative and will keep young and old on baited breath for book two, Monster Mountains. This book has it all humour and magic all encased in original wrapping which keeps this tale as fresh as the day it was written. Well worthy of 5 stars, I have told my nieces to get their own copy

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a new series

Fright Forest is the first in a new series of six books by Marcus Sedgwick. As with Sedgwick’s previous series: Raven Mysteries, this book has been fantastically illustrated by Pete Williamson. Both series are a nice introduction to the Gothic style.

This book tells the story of Elf Girl, Raven Boy and Rat and their journey to save their forest from an ogre who is pulling down all of the trees. Full of magic (magic bows, talking animals) and magical creatures (witches, ogres, trolls and goblins) this book has the feel of some of the older style classics which I used to love reading as a kid!

I really enjoyed this book. Its very easy to read, probably easy enough for a 7-year-old to read by themselves. The chapters are short and the illustrations break it up nicely. There is mention made of children being eaten so maybe if you’re considering reading this to your sensitive 5-year-old, read it yourself first. Otherwise I imagine that people of all ages will enjoy this new series. Looking forward to the next one in the series: Monster Mountains.

Marcus Sedgwick Author Of Fright Forest pdf Book was born in Kent, England. Marcus is a British author and illustrator as well as a musician. He is the author of several books, including Witch Hill and The Book of Dead Days, both of which were nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award. The most recent of these nominations rekindled a fascination with Poe that has borne fruit here in (in The Restless Dead, 2007) the form of “The Heart of Another” – inspired by Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Of his story, Sedgwick says, “This was one of those stories that I thought might be a novel originally but actually was much better suited to the tight form of the short story. I had the initial idea some years ago but was just waiting for the right ingredient to come along. Poe’s story, as well as his own fascination with technique, provided that final piece of the puzzle.”

He used to play for two bands namely playing the drums for Garrett and as the guitarist in an ABBA tribute group. He has published novels such as Floodland (winner of the Branford Boase Award in 2001) and The Dark Horse (shortlisted for The Guardian Children’s Book Award 2002).
