Florida Pdf Summary Reviews By Lauren Groff

Florida Pdf is a Comilation of Fictional short stories By Lauren Groff.

Florida Pdf Book Summary

The stories in this collection span characters, towns, decades, even centuries, but Florida—its landscape, climate, history, and state of mind—becomes its gravitational center: an energy, a mood, as much as a place of residence. Groff transports the reader, then jolts us alert with a crackle of wit, a wave of sadness, a flash of cruelty, as she writes about loneliness, rage, family, and the passage of time. With shocking accuracy and effect, she pinpoints the moments and decisions and connections behind human pleasure and pain, hope and despair, love and fury—the moments that make us alive.

I heard Lauren Groff interviewed on a City Arts and Lectures podcast and was so fascinated by her that I felt compelled to read one of her books. Florida is a very unusual book, to say the least. Her writing style and powerful use of language did not disappoint. However, for me, the relentless underpinnings of grief, pain, and dysfunction of her characters, especially of children, made reading this book almost too painful at times, in spite of the eloquence and stunning use of language. By the time I got to “Above and Below” the pain of her character was so intense that I skipped to the end of that story. The language pulled me forward, but the pain shut me down. After listening to the interview, I plan to read Matrix, however.

Florida has a part in all the stories, but not enough to tie them together.
The stories are interesting as short stories on their own, but that was not what I was expecting or wanted. I wanted more from most of he stories.

Many people look for certain types of stories with requisite endings even before they begin reading. That is understandable, but unfortunately limiting for readers and writers of stories. Those types readers often find Groff boring, or too sad, or too hard to follow.
It must be said that if you’re not offending or finding some readers unable to finish your story, then you’re writing to close to the line. Lauren Groff writes what she feels, what her imagination unleashes, and what she deems as important. What else would you want from a writer. There are plenty of writers that turn out ditto narratives for their entire time as a writer, and they are often very successful and fill a valid and worthy place in story-telling. But hat’s not the stuff of Groff.
Every so often in the middle of a very tight narrative comes a sentence or phrase that evokes the sense and grit of Sylvia Path-“faces owled, the wind spoke through the cracks in the window frames, the storm came and erased the quiet, in the morning the older girl took out her sister’s braids and the little one’s hair fluffed out into a beautiful dark cloud” (all in shape or form personifications that are blended into sentences in a seamless way as to let them appear as natural prose). At those points I stop and read those sections again, write them down, and think this is what makes her a writer worth reading.
