I was surprised at the low cost of this when I purchased it; nothing indicated it was a short story. I love short stories, but Amazon should have posted it as such.
I loved the retro feel (did I just say retro – it really wasn’t that long ago!), with using pay phones and faxes. And, of course we love to see Reacher swing into action. Having said that, it seems there were too many possible villains to build on, and that was a little distracting. But overall, it was a pretty good read.
Many authors, who have several published works, tend to rest on their laurels now and then, and fall short in creating characters, plots, sub-plots or endings. I must say that even for a short story, this one ended so abruptly, and I was so unprepared for a short story, that I wondered if I had lost part of the book. I was so disappointed to see that is really had ended! So I can’t give this a 5 star. But it is worth the read. ♥

Jack Reacher is best known as a primary character in Lee Child’s excellent novel series, but Child’s short stories are an excellent way of appreciating the wonderful character that Child has developed over his many novels. In Deep Down we can feel the discomfort of the young star MP that Reacher was, when placed undercover hastily and with little preparation by his “handler”. He gives us the sense of the discomfort playing that role produced for Reacher, and how artfully he used his instinctive approach to help him identify the Soviet mole in the story, and then his physical skills to survive the blowback from the Soviet Embassy “wet boys” when it arrives. There is a subplot that is there as a distractor, and all in all, the short story is very well constructed and told. Second Son is another one of my favorite Reacher short stories, as it presents Reacher’s childhood personality as a clear window into how he became the unique adult man in the novels. Highly recommended!
