The battle between the Underworld and the Elves is finally here and holy moly did it deliver. In the words of Reagan: “Someone had to stand in the way. We had to stand in the way. We had to be the ringleaders for a different, better future”. This was the culmination of a terrific set of novels and a fabulous finish to one of my all-time favourite series and rereads. While I felt heartsick starting it and found myself reading over passages towards the end to put off the inevitable, this series holds a special place in my heart as it kicked off my K. F. Breene addiction way back when and I’m so grateful I picked up Book 1 years ago when my first Kindle was still giving me book recommendations because I was too stupid to know how to turn them off from my Home Screen. Where to start? There was a lot to tie off in this book, seeing as it wraps up Reagan’s story, so while some of the usual suspects (and some personal favourites) like Cahal, Lucifer and Steve didn’t feature as heavily as they may have in the lead up to this book, there was definitely more of some other characters that were due to take their moment in the sun. Or the moon, since one of them was the delicious Darius, and considering no female with a beating heart wants him to burn to a crisp, that dude needs to keep out of the sunlight.

Revealing a massive clue in the title (yes, this is sarcasm), the book obviously focusses around the inevitable battle for the Realm with Reagan and her merry band stuck in the middle and still not entirely positive what direction their path will take. There was great lead up into this and even better follow through. I was worried that the actual events leading up to said battle and the event itself might be done quickly, because let’s face it, even the best authors and books will often have a key element over and done with even after heaps of build up. I’m happy to say this didn’t happen here. The reader started the journey with Reagan and we absolutely got to finish it with her. All of the characters I’ve loved so hard make an appearance, even if it was only for a moment as I mentioned above, so it really was like saying goodbye to old friends. If, like me, you’re a chronic re-reader of books, you’re going to love parts of this one as there are bits and pieces that popped out that I think I might have missed or forgotten about if didn’t revisit this world so frequently. I’m talking things from the early books as there are times were we get to take a stroll back to the beginning. As a huge nerd myself, this made me squeal a little and provided even more closure to some questions I’d had floating around, none of which I’ll bring up here in case there are some other closet geeks wanting their OMG moments.

For fans of these books, it’ll have everything you love: humour, suspense, action, some smexy times and romance and a few twists to keep you on your toes. There were some smooshy scenes between Darius and Reagan that were beautiful and will show most men as lacking lol. The book kicks off with a bang (literally) as Reagan tries to solve the age-old question: How do merpeople get down and dirty? Thank goodness that was solved and sleepless nights wondering about it put to an end. While this is one of the few books where I adore all of the characters (with the possible exception of Penny’s mother #sorrynotsorry), Reagan and Darius, as always, were the standouts for me. The former’s special brand of humour and the latter’s smooth and deadly charisma and dedication to his love make the book shine. One of the things I love about this author is that she gives her characters their own quirks without making the jokes seem tired and overdone. Reagan continues to be the perfect blend of brash and vulnerable, stirring everyone within an inch of their life and adding her own colour to the pages that keep you turning well into the early hours of the morning.

Most of the book is set in the Brink or in the Realm, with smatterings at Roger’s and in the Underworld. There’s fighting, premonitions and uncertainty with no one’s path set in stone and the reader kept on their toes to see if everyone survives. Old secrets creep up from the past involving the vampire we love to hate (unless you’re me and you just love to love Vlad). One of the things that I’d mentioned about the previous two books is that some of the chapters were from other character’s points of view, namely Penny and Charity, with a splash of Lucifer. While this still happened in Book 11, there seemed to be a lot less of it. This meant more Reagan which is always a winner in my book. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the chapters that were from a different perspective, particularly seeing Penny and Reagan’s beautiful and chaotic friendship from the former’s point of view, but this world absolutely starts and ends with Reagan for me and I was really pleased that while some of the other characters got a solid wrap up (probably could have had a bit more on Charity, Devon and the Shifters, but no biggie), I walked out hand and hand with Reagan, my main woman crush. There was a teeny bit towards the end involving a threat to Reagan that I found a bit of stretch and didn’t quite gel with her superhero-like and immortal character (I won’t ruin it), but that’s just my take on it and it didn’t influence my love of the story at all.

Was there closure? Yes. The author didn’t weigh the book down with copious amounts of ‘what happened next’ but there was just the right amount of happily ever after written in a way where readers can still fill in some of the tiny gaps on their own. Like, will Cahal get his own series and fall desperately in love with me? Yeah, probably (holy jeebus, he’s a hot book boyfriend and was dynamite any time muscle was needed – hot tip: there’s definitely room and a solid lead in here to give him his own series). Were there tears? Yep. I hate crying in books and I’m not entirely sure if I was being dragged under with the solid writing and excellent characters or if I was just an emotional mess because even as an adult I can’t come to terms with the fact that one of my favourite authors can’t just keep writing books in my favourite series until she or I drop dead, so let’s go with blaming the author and keep my heart cold and shrivelled lol.

So while a part of me might remain a teeny bit bitter that this series isn’t going on forever, the last book definitely paid homage to the journey fans have been on and finished off as it started – taking names and kicking butt. I loved it and am sad Reagan’s story is over. On a positive note, Battle with Fire will slide in perfectly beside all the other DDVN books in my Favourites folder in my library and will be reread often. Let me finish by unashamedly begging the author to pick up one of the other characters’ stories and delving into the world again and writing a few short stories here and there on our favourite heroine so we get to check in on Reagan, Darius, Cahal, Penny, Emery, Charity, Devon, Roger, Vlad, Steve and his big…roar… and Lucifer. Honestly, I could go on and on, I love this series so hard.
