A Forgery of Roses Summary
Myra Whitlock has a gift. One many would kill for. She’s an artist whose portraits alter people’s real-life bodies, a talent she must hide from those who would kidnap, blackmail, and worse in order to control it. Guarding that secret is the only way to keep her younger sister safe now that their parents are gone.
But one frigid night, the governor’s wife discovers the truth and threatens to expose Myra if she does not complete a special portrait that would resurrect the governor’s dead son. Desperate, Myra ventures to his legendary stone mansion.
Once she arrives, however, it becomes clear the boy’s death was no accident. Someone dangerous lurks within these glittering halls. Someone harboring a disturbing obsession with portrait magic.
Myra cannot do the painting until she knows what really happened, so she turns to the governor’s older son, a captivating redheaded poet. Together, they delve into the family’s most shadowed affairs, racing to uncover the truth before the secret Myra spent her life concealing makes her the killer’s next victim.

A Forgery of Roses Reviews (Amazon.com)
4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable gothic murder mystery

A Forgery of Roses is a gothic whodunnit filled with portrait magic, a haunted floor, grotesque paintings, disappearances, a sweet romance, and an abundance of secrets.
Our heroine, Myra, is a talented artist who is willing to do anything for her sister who is seriously ill. Although I was slightly annoyed by the amount of times she talked about her sister and how poor they are. Like we get it, you don’t need to constantly remind us of your motivations. The hero tries to be the perfect son but always fails. He is unable to live up to his parents’ expectations. He has social anxiety and I appreciated the discussion around his anxiety and panic attacks. Although his inability to stand up to his parents did annoy me especially when it resulted in direct harm to the heroine. The romance is sweet but I wasn’t really invested in it. The other parts of the story were more interesting than the romance.
I found the reveal to be quite clever. I had an idea who was involved but I didn’t expect it to play out the way it did. While everything is resolved at the end, the epilogue is open-ended enough for a sequel, so I’m curious if the author will go that route. While this is YA, it didn’t read that youngish. Overall, this is an enjoyable story that is part murder mystery, part fantasy, and part gothic.

A story with a lot of different elements that blend perfectly together! Art, murder mystery, romance, and magic.
After Sing Me Forgotten, I have been waiting for the next book from this author and this one didn’t disappoint. The characters are relatable, especially August. I feel that this book gives a very very accurate representation of anxiety, and it was nice to see. A character who is simply an introvert, and doesn’t need feel the need to change.
5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and suspenseful

A forgery of roses is my new favorite gothic fantasy novel. Set in a world where some artists can use magic to alter another living being through their painting. In a world where this is seen as an abomination and against the creator, artists like Myras mother go missing because of their gift. Myra must keep her talents a secret to keep her and her younger sister safe.
I fell in love with the story right from the start because of the characters. Jessica S. Olsen captured the struggle and loneliness that chronic illness causes while also showing the struggles for answers through Myras younger sisters character. She also really made Myras character so much deeper by showing what it’s like to watch your loved one suffer. You always feel the love Myra has for her sister and how far she will to get her sister the help she needs. The characters have a lot more depth than I expected.
A forgery of roses was far from predictable. The mystery side had me guessing until the end and I didn’t see it coming. There’s just enough of mystery, romance, fantasy and murder to made it a hard to put down novel. I found it so easy to get immersed into the world created. I highly recommend this novel.
