Very Cold People Pdf Summary

The much-anticipated debut novel from the author of 300 Arguments: a shattering account of growing up and out of the suffocating constraints of small-town America.

For Ruthie, the frozen, snow-padded town of Waitsfield, Massachusetts, is all she has ever known. But this is no picturesque New England. Once “home of the bean and the cod, where Lowells speak only to Cabots, and Cabots speak only to God,” by the tail-end of the twentieth century it is an unforgiving place, awash with secrets.

Very Cold People tells Ruthie’s story, through her eyes: from the shame handed down through her immigrant forebears and indomitable mother, to the violences endured by her high school friends, each suffering a fate worse than the last. For Ruthie, Waitsfield is a place to be survived–and a girl like her would be lucky to get out alive.

Part social commentary and part Gothic horror, Very Cold People is an ungilded portrait of girlhood at the crossroads of history and social class. In her eagerly anticipated debut novel, Sarah Manguso has produced a masterwork on how very cold places make for very cold people, and a pitiless look at an all-American whiteness.

I absolutely adore this book for so many reasons, I could talk about it for hours. It’s written so wonderfully and so meticulously that, though sometimes vague, it perfectly portrays the depressing and beautiful pieces of one’s life and fragmented memories. It does a wonderful job at implying things in a way that’s still understandable, but not so blatantly that it isn’t disectable. 10/10, genuinely brought me to tears.

A fiction author’s responsibility is to entertain as well as inform. While there certainly is a great deal of information revealed about this sympathetic protagonist, a narrative arc and plot do not exist. Rather, the storyline is delivered through brief snippets–as entries in a journal or a stream of consciousness memoir might be. Without a doubt, there is a tale to be told here. The editor did a disservice to the author and her readers by not encouraging her to present that story in the most effective manner possible. I do understand why several critics have become enthralled by the book. If you stop to savor the paragraphs individually and not as a work of art in its entirety, you cannot help but be moved by the poignant honesty and vulnerability contained therein. Perhaps these reviewers believe that–at long last–they’ve found the next Holden Caulfield or Francie Nolan? If you’re solely hoping to gain insight into the damage and alienation that narcissistic parents can inflict, this is your book. However, if you would like to be a passenger in this journey as well, you may be disappointed.

This is the 4th book I’ve read br Manguso in the last 2 weeks. What an incredible author. Was this book about cold and vicious people? Yes, but it was truly compelling, moving and very, very real. I usually don’t read books about lives filled with tragedy as I spent my professional life treating convicts and severely the mentally ill. However, in this prose I found a girl/woman who showed resiliency, hope and who struggled to seek a better life. Very empowering. The author is painfully honest, deeply sensitive in spite of her traumatizing history but it is so poignantly gifted as a writer that I believe that this a must read for anyone who is intellectually curious about the darkness of life, the power of resilience and the benefits of hope in shaping a better condition for their lives.
