This is one of those books everyone has heard of but few have actually read. I wanted to know what it was really like. I can see why it made such a huge impact, written in 1852 and credited with speeding up the emancipation of slaves in America. Reading it nowadays, I was surprised how moving it was, the descriptions of brutality against slaves are said to be accurate and are believable and horrific. The religiosity and sentimentality are ghastly but considering Stowe was writing for a completely different audience, it’s understandable. Her racist attitudes towards black people, though of her time and sympathetic, show the ignorance and attitudes of a white population still deeply embedded in the need to dehumanise slaves, at best deeply patriarchal and patronising. However I believe she was genuinely trying to move her readers to action against slavery and the treatment of black people and towards a change in attitude. I found it more interesting than I expected with a narrative that carries the reader with the story. Just skip the sentimental and religious passages.
