There’s a Word for That Pdf Summary

“Engrossing, hilarious, and tender… I couldn’t put it down.”
Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Project

A hilarious and moving chronicle of a wildly flawed family that comes together–in rehab, of all places–even as each member is on the verge of falling apart

Introducing the Kesslers: Marty, a retired LA film producer whose self-worth has been eroded by age and a late-in-life passion for opioids; his daughter Janine, former child star suffering the aftereffects of a life in the public eye; and granddaughter Hailey, the “less-than” twin sister, whose inferiority complex takes a most unexpected turn. Nearly six thousand miles away, in London, celebrated author Bunny Small, Marty’s long-forgotten first wife, has her own problems: a “preposterous” case of writer’s block, a monstrous drinking habit, and a son who has fled halfway around the world to escape her.

When Marty’s pill-popping gets out of hand and Bunny’s boozing reaches crisis proportions, a perfect storm of dysfunction brings them all together at Directions, Malibu’s most exclusive and absurd rehab center.

But for all their failings, the members of this estranged–and strange–family love each other. Rich with warmth, humor, and deep insight, There’s a Word for That is a comic ode to surviving the people closest to us, navigating the perils of success, and taking one last look in the rearview mirror before mapping out the road ahead.

I enjoyed the storyline and hilarious characters involved in 2 deeply dysfunctional families. The development of so many characters was a little difficult to absorb and follow but each character had their own problems and history that suddenly begins to intertwine. The author did a fantastic job giving each character their own story and special, often funny, traits.

I absolutely adored this book and hated to see it to end. Movie producer Marty is addicted to heroin and wives (numerous), his previously unknown ex Bunny is a best-selling British novelist who has a troubled relationship with her son Henry and booze, Marty’s daughter Janine is a reclusive former child star and his grandchildren have issues of their own… all interweave when Marty and Bunny wind up in rehab for drug and alcohol issues, although neither are aware at first that they are in the same facility. Everyone crosses paths and new relationships form; everything is endearing, amusing and just delightful. You really feel as though you KNOW each character and you root for them despite laughing at their predicaments in life. Highly, highly recommend! I hope this author comes out with another adult story soon – maybe a sequel?

In There’s a Word for That, Sloane Tanen relates the twists and turns of the wildly dysfunctional Kessler family. Such stories have been explored time and time again in TV series, movies, and novels. Think Arrested Development, Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums, or recently published The Floating Feldman’s for example. With the genre so well explored, staying clear of clichés or rehashed jokes can be tricky. Tanen manages it effortlessly in her slightly dark, but wry and witty page-turner.

There are families with issues and then there are the Kesslers. They live apart, sweep secrets under the rug, have self-destructive behaviours and hold grudges whose origin is forgotten. But they are forced to reconnect and rethink their paths when the seventy-something year old estranged father and first wife end up in the same rehab facility. The deeply flawed members of the Kessler family will find out if time can help them let bygones be bygones. A great, funny and light read.
