The Serpent and the Wings of Night Review

Briana Bailon

When I heard about this book being described as, “Hunger Games” but make it fantasy and with vampires, I knew I had to read this for myself! This also had some slow burn romance, alliances with a certain other competitor, danger, suspense, action, and a whole lot of blood as you’d except with a story revolves around vampires.

Set in a world filled with different factions of vampires, there was a competition that was held every hundred years called, the Kejari, the ultimate battle against other competitors in order to win something from the goddess of death. For Oraya, it was her chance to prove herself and hopefully win the competition for her chance at a greater life. As the adopted daughter of the Nightborn vampire King, Vincent, he took her when she was little and grew up surrounded by predators her whole life. Oraya may have been a human, but she was a formidable warrior in her own right, especially with the training she got from her “father”. With the games, it was all about strategy and strength, and as Oraya would later find herself doing, making alliances in order to survive and win.

This was my first book to read by Carissa Broadbent so, I was very curious and intrigued by this book in particular. Right away from the beginning, I found the story to be very interesting with the way Oraya was adopted by Vincent and years later she became a stronger woman. Even from the first chapter, I could sense that Oraya wasn’t the type of woman to go down without a fight, and with her entering the Kejari, I had faith she would overcome any obstacles in her way.

The beginning didn’t waste any time with the action and the level of skills that Oraya needed to utilize in order to survive. I could see why people have been comparing this to, “Hunger Games”, with the level of savagery, blood, gore, and absolute chaos that ensued in each of the trials, it was no joke, every single second counted. At any moment, it could have been Oraya’s last, but thankfully with her level of control and precision, she was able to survive. Then once Raihn was introduced, I was immediately wondering, “who is this vampire? what’s his deal? And why do I get the feeling something’s going to happen between him and Oraya?” Raihn was the type of vampire that was equally powerful, strategic, and observant. Raihn didn’t waste any time making his presence known among the other competitors and how would you ask? Well that’s easy, by simply unaliving his fellow opponent in front of everyone so, all of them knew that was just a taste of what he was capable of. Although, when Raihn and Oraya first met, it literally ended with Oraya stabbing him in the thigh, but hey, she was trying to survive, can’t blame her. I liked the banter between Raihn and Oraya especially with the old time favorite of, “stop or I’ll stab you/ what are you going to do, stab me?” trope haha.

The beginning also set up the scene in how Oraya was adopted by Vincent (King of Nightborn Vampires) a.k.a. her adopted father. Even from a young age, Oraya knew she would never be safe so, with that in mind she was always mindful of her surroundings and trained to keep herself protected. I liked that Oraya wasn’t necessarily a vulnerable character who didn’t know what to do, she had the means to protect herself, was strong, but with that kind of mindset, she always kept her emotions locked up as to not get in the way of focusing. Kind of made me realize just how much Oraya did in order to survive her life even way before she was in the Kejari.

With each trial that Oraya was faced with, not only did she have to fight for her life, but also learn new things about herself and other such as, Raihn. For starters, I didn’t expect Oraya to be able to use magic, but with the way she unexpectedly found out through an unexpected moment with Raihn, it was clear that there was even more hidden beneath the surface that Oraya was capable of. As the story went, I found myself loving Oraya and the way she went about the games, sure there was a lot of blood and multiple injuries along the way, but every time she was able to get back up and finish the trial. Even Raihn was someone I found myself quickly intrigued by, especially learning a bit about his backstory was eye opening. Together, Oraya and Raihn became a strong duo, and again I really enjoyed their banter and slow friendship (dare I say) that started to form along the way.

I also loved the progression in Oraya and Raihn’s relationship from allies to kind of friends to lovers. While there was some romance, I wouldn’t say this was romance heavy, more like a slow burn romance if anything. Oraya and Raihn slowly but surely become more than allies, they became close in an unexpected way, and believe it or not felt that “unspoken thing” between them or at least that was my impression while reading. Even before things got romantic and the sexual tension started to happen later on, I was already loving how Oraya and Raihn were together in the beginning. The banter was great, the team work (lol), recognizing how the other person was that only they could pick up on the smallest of details really highlighted just how much Oraya and Raihn had gotten close. The moment in the cave (IYKYK!) was one where I was like, “OMG OMG!” But again, it also spoke to the level of trust that Oraya and Raihn had developed over the course of the story. Plus it was a pretty steamy moment if I say so myself. I remember hearing someone say that they didn’t like the added smut scenes in this book, but I have to disagree, it didn’t take away from Oraya and Raihn’s relationship, if anything the fact that she did what she did in the cave was kind of a big deal especially considering what she went through as a teenager (flashback mentioned earlier in book). All this to say that I loved Oraya and Raihn together and as individuals!

OMG OMG OMG OMG! This by far exceeded my expectations like, “WTF?!” Especially towards the end when things started to get really intense, I was shook! Surprised! Flabbergasted! And just a rollercoaster of emotions at the ending. Just when I thought I knew what I was getting myself into…WRONG! The twists and turns in this story were unexpected, but in the best way possible and not to mention revelations that changed the course of Oraya and Raihn’s lives! Phew, if you couldn’t tell, I was really shocked by the turn of events. This was an action packed adventure filled with death defying challenges, bits of political drama from the different Houses of Vampire factions, alliances, sprinkles of tension, a slow burn romance well worth the wait, and a whole lot of me constantly dropping my jaw to the ground at what I read as if it was unfolding in real time before my very eyes. Oraya was literally such a strong female lead, with so much power within her, the skill and precision she wielded both with her blades and strategies were impressive. I also loved learning more about her and seeing her open up a bit about her fears/ vulnerabilities which, added more depth to her character amongst all that was happening in the story. Raihn, omg, that vampire was charming, quick wit, always bantering with Oraya, and equally a formidable, fierce, deadly warrior you wouldn’t want to cross paths with. The way Oraya and Raihn first started off at the beginning compared to the very ending was a drastic change that highlighted they came a long way, plus nothing would ever be the same after the events that went down! I would say if you’ve been wanting to get back into fantasy books or just looking for a new book in general I would highly recommend this book!
