The Ice Queen Book Summary

Be careful what you wish for. A small town librarian lives a quiet life without much excitement. One day, she mutters an idle wish and, while standing in her house, is struck by lightning. But instead of ending her life, this cataclysmic event sparks it into a new beginning.

She goes in search of Lazarus Jones, a fellow survivor who was struck dead, then simply got up and walked away. Perhaps this stranger who has seen death face to face can teach her to live without fear. When she finds him, he is her opposite, a burning man whose breath can boil water and whose touch scorches. As an obsessive love affair begins between them, both are forced to hide their most dangerous secrets—what turned one to ice and the other to fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Alice Hoffman

This book had me from the first sentence. I felt drawn to the characters and their intertwined fates; the illusion of people having control of their own lives slowly slipped away, almost imperceptibly. Death was always in the air, but was often cheated of his due. Those moments illuminated the narrative.

Color is an integral part of the story, so much so that I perceived it as a supporting character, a secondary protagonist. Color ebbs and flows, it brings both clarity and obfuscation, it grounds the narrative.

I have read nearly all of Alice Hoffman’s books and this is far and away my favorite; I will be living with these characters in my head for quite some time. For me, that is the hallmark of a truly good novel; I didn’t want the story to end, but it ended nonetheless and in exactly the fashion it needed to. My heart is full.

I bought this a while back and wasn’t ready to read it even though I read a few pages. On a plane without wifi I finished a book but couldn’t start a new one that wasn’t already open on my kindle app. So I thought I was stuck with this book and begrudgingly began to read it, until I cared. I cared about the characters, the color red, life, death, all of it. Damn it Alice! You did it again! You hooked me with a book that will live in my soul. You saw me to Iceland and back home and gave me permission to weep for all the right reasons. Who do I recommend this book too? Probably all the people who thumb their noses up at the first pages because if you read to the end like me you will be so glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Imaginative, Spellbinding Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups

This is a fairy tale for grown-ups. And quite a tale it is with the suffering heroine, the monster with whom she falls in love, and a desperately unhappy life that happily turns around.

As a little girl, our heroine said something almost every angry child utters at one time or another. But in this case, the meanspirited wish came true, causing the unnamed narrator to believe she could make bad things happen just by wishing it so. After living a solitary, loveless life with a heart that has turned to ice, her brother, Ned, essentially forces her to move from their family home in New Jersey to be near him in Florida. And then the seemingly impossible happens: She is struck by lightning. While the physical effects of the lightning strike are horrific, it gives her a new beginning as she embarks on a passionate love affair with another lightning strike survivor—a man who is so burning hot that his breath can make water boil. Can love make the ice queen’s heart melt? Like her, he harbors secrets that are almost too terrible to speak aloud, but it is only when the strange and horrific secrets are revealed that they lose their power to hurt.

Like all good fairy tales, there is a moral lesson that leads to a healing redemption and a bold transformation. Author Alice Hoffman, who is a genius at the tricky genre of magical realism, has created an imaginative, emotionally-searing story that is absolutely spellbinding. And the ending is perfect. (Well, it is a fairy tale!)

Bonus: This is also a fascinating scientific primer on the physical and psychological effects of lightning strikes on human beings, as well as the basics of chaos theory.
