Amber has it far too good, only to discover how bad her life really is. Her marriage has ended and her lovely home in the burbs echos the emptiness of her life. She spends hours looking out her windows at the perfect lives of her neighbors not understanding how her perfect life went so wrong and envying the perfection of the neighbors’ lives. Her neighbors don’t like her, and the wife of the perfect couple across the street is found murdered close to a seedy no-tell motel.

I couldn’t identify with the protagonist and didn’t find her a very sympathetic character, but the story was very well plotted and pulled me along. None of the characters were very likeable although Amber’s best friend and lawyer was always doing her best for her friend. I loved the name given to the next-door neighbors’ child. It was the only humorous element in the book. Due to the lack of warmth of the characters and my inability to connect with even the protagonist, my score of the book dropped from five to four stars.

The book is a stand-alone book that could become a series if the author wished to follow what was next for the protagonist. I might read such a book, because I think she would become much happier in the next chapter of her life. The book was free of any typos or other editing issues that plague other e-books. It is clear that this book wasn’t just cranked out as quickly as possible, but was treated with the loving care of a good author. Kudos to Ms Pawlish.

I visited this page and then clicked off to another book three times that I can remember before actually deciding to dip in a toe. It appeared to be so very different from the Reed Ferguson and Dewey Webb mysteries that I enjoy so much. It wasn’t until I read through the brief extract the author provided to her mailing list that that I finally hit the purchase button.

While essentially a mystery this tale which the author identifies as a “tale of suspense” is much more about the absence of knowledge than it is about the gathering and organizing of knowledge. Trapped in a single viewpoint, and a tightly controlled one at that, you quickly begin to suspect something is being withheld and that it has a great deal of bearing and weight. The question is how and when will it come out and what it might be. Enjoy the ride and hope, as I do, that this step into another world serves to re-energize the author and that much more is coming in the future for Reed and Dewey.

I am a fan of Renee Pawlish’s detective series – Reed Ferguson – and didn’t know what to expect when beginning this new book, The Girl in the Window. I found it quite a departure from her usual writing. While there is a mystery in this book, there was little else in common with the Ferguson series. It begins with the girl in the window. She had everything she wanted: the handsome, well-to-do husband; the perfect house in the perfect neighborhood; the perfect gym. . Then her marriage fell apart – was it ever close to perfect? Was any of it? She stands in the window every morning and watches Caleb leave for work – the handsome neighbor with the beautiful home, wife, marriage – everything Amber wants including Caleb. Then it all falls apart. Is anything ever as it seems from the outside looking in? There is a murder. Was Amber involved? No spoilers here. I recommend this well written, interesting mystery and I hope Ms Pawlish continues to write more books like this one!
