Olga Dies Dreaming Pdf Summary

It’s 2017, and Olga and her brother, Pedro “Prieto” Acevedo, are bold-faced names in their hometown of New York. Prieto is a popular congressman representing their gentrifying Latinx neighborhood in Brooklyn while Olga is the tony wedding planner for Manhattan’s powerbrokers.

Despite their alluring public lives, behind closed doors things are far less rosy. Sure, Olga can orchestrate the love stories of the 1%, but she can’t seem to find her own…until she meets Matteo, who forces her to confront the effects of long-held family secrets…

Twenty-seven years ago, their mother, Blanca, a Young Lord-turned-radical, abandoned her children to advance a militant political cause, leaving them to be raised by their grandmother. Now, with the winds of hurricane season, Blanca has come barreling back into their lives.

Set against the backdrop of New York City in the months surrounding the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico’s history, Olga Dies Dreaming is a story that examines political corruption, familial strife and the very notion of the American dream–all while asking what it really means to weather a storm.

This book really blew me away, with the ability to delicately and not so delicately make blunt the nuances and complexity of PUERTO Rico, the island, the people, this diaspora. It also was a valuable investigation of family, what ties us together, and what it means to attach yourself to the people around you. I was incredibly impressed with this book. It was intelligent, entertaining and engaging while being serious and not taking itself too seriously. One of the best things I’ve read that plays so closely with reality in a long time.

Having lived in Puerto Rico at the end of the 70’s and into the first half of the 80’s, there was so much I didn’t understand about what had gone before and what came afterwards. I am not Puerto Rican but I loved my time there, the people I met and the island itself. Thank you, Xochitl Gonzalez, for reminding me and explaining to me why Puerto Rico remains so much of who I am today. I laughed, I remembered, and I cried at the memories. Such a complex and beautiful place. In reading this book, my hope is rekindled for a brighter future for Puerto Rico. Pa’lante!

I had been waiting for this book to come off my queue and I am so happy it finally did. I was completely immersed in the story in the first few pages, and enjoyed every last second of it. The characters were vibrant, thoughtful, and profound it their own individual stories and arcs and then as support to Olga’s journey. It was incredibly well-written and I could easily see this being adapted to a movie because the story jumped off the page. Go read this book already!
