Leaving Home Pdf Summary

Leaving Home brings together three, previously published short pieces, each dealing with a variation on the theme of leaving home. The first, “Weights and Measures,” deals with the tragic loss of a child; the second is a non-fiction letter Picoult wrote to her eldest son as he left for college; and, “Ritz” tells the story of a mother who takes the vacation all mothers need sometime.

Picoult gave us a gift in the form of three snippets, three micro stories.

When I first heard about Kindles Singles and all the hoopla around “natural length” I was left scratching my head. Aren’t these singles written by authors? Aren’t authors naturally prone to long, wordy, well traveled tales? How good could this little pinch of a story be?

Well, I took the chance. And guess what? That pinch of a story was well worth the 2.99 price tag.

The first story is about a couple, a loving everyday couple tested by the loss of their daughter. Heartbreaking from the first word. But Picoult gives you a moral as this could-be-anyone couple lives through the aftermath of loss. It isn’t an “in your face” moral, like a zip tie or clincher would be, Picoult doesn’t leave you waiting for the last line to sum it up. It’s more of a woven thread, that if you read carefully you’ll catch and be attuned to finding as she continues on. The growth and the demise is the study of Weight and Measure.

The second snip is really just a letter. A privately public letter. It’s the words she spoke, as a mother to her son as she cast him off into the world. I’m not a parent, I don’t anticipate making that sort of declaration of a few more decades, but the truth is…what she said and how she said will still be as true then as it is now. This letter alone is worth the price for any parent getting ready to say goodbye in a less that permeant way.

And finally, the vacation. This one was, by far and away, the least touching of the three. It felt rushed like a story that could have been, squeezed into an essay that couldn’t or shouldn’t be very long.

I guess the final question most people wonder is if buying a Single at $3.00 is really “worth it”…and to that I guess I have to say…Consider a single to be a cupcake. Your favorite flavor and filling. A bite sized treat from your favorite author. Sure, you’d probably enjoy a full cake more…but that doesn’t mean you’d pass up on the cupcake if that were your only option…So, take a bite and enjoy!

I’ve found that Kindle Singles are always worth reading. They’re either very well-written fiction or non-fiction that is educational and extremely informative. The three short pieces in Jodi Picoult’s “Leaving Home” all deal with loss of one kind or another. The first story is called “Weights and Measures”. This one I found to be a very sad story with a strange ending, but as the reader gets to know the characters of Abe and Sarah, the ending makes sense. The story, in places, brings a few tears to the eyes, but Picoult knows human emotions quite well, where and when they hit the character and also the reader.

Second is a letter to Jodi Picoult’s son that she wrote to him when he went off to college at age 18. It’s from a mother’s heart, and the advice she gives him is what the fabric is made of when a parent gives her child wings. The letter is very touching and I feel privileged to be allowed to read such a personal letter.

The third and last story is “Ritz” and this one finds humor, loss and anger all mixed up into one when a mother decides she needs a vacation and props a note up on the orange juice in the refrigerator saying that she’s taking a break. Her husband and two children haven’t a clue as to where she is, and even if she’s returning. Wives and mothers can relate to her feelings when that “Calgon, take me away” moment hits, only this wife and mother does it in a big way and she’s far from the bathtub.
