I And My Chimney Pdf Summary
In those houses which are strictly double houses–that is, where the hall is in the middle–the fireplaces usually are on opposite sides; so that while one member of the household is warming himself at a fire built into a recess of the north wall, say another member, the former’s own brother, perhaps, may be holding his feet to the blaze before a hearth in the south wall–the two thus fairly sitting back to back. Is this well? Be it put to any man who has a proper fraternal feeling. Has it not a sort of sulky appearance? But very probably this style of chimney building originated with some architect afflicted with a quarrelsome family.

I love the humor. The dialogue is my favorite part as Melville so wonderfully characterizes 19th century language and dialect.

This short story first published in 1856 (I believe) has long been neglected and overlooked, which is a bit of a shame. Humorous in style this is a fun little story about a man and his chimney. A man can become attached to his shed, so why not his chimney? And as you read this you see that the chimney is of magnificent proportions. Already having lost some of its stature to damage to the building in the past, a battle now ensues to stop it being removed all together.
With this chimney taking up so much space the lady of the house wants it removed, but her husband has other ideas. In a battle of wits who will win? And how far will a man go to protect his chimney?
This isn’t exactly a masterpiece but it is most definitely original and should bring a grin to your face.
