Better than the movie, in my opinion! The character names threw me off, the story was exceptional and the plot was truly amazing!

This book brings back what true horror should be. A who done it with a murder every month until it ends. He terrifies with each full moon and builds the town with each new death. Who is it? Who will be next? Written in a style that keeps you reading. Stephen King is the master.

I have read some of king before and liked what I have come across. Not a die hard fan mind you but I admire a job well done. But the author can become unwieldy in information dumps. In this novella king gives us the macabre but spares us the over psychological over descriptions.

Kept me on the edge of me seat the whole read. Despite the genre this book was like a breath of fresh air for me, because of the length, and because it’s outside my normal genre. I love that king goes into detail about each character and has a back story for them. I also like the format of the chapters, each chapter is a month, and short. Super easy stress free read!

Something evil is stalking the residents of Tarker’s Mills Maine. It comes once a month when the moon is full. It picks it’s victims without prejudice first a railroad worker during a January blizzard. Next in the month of February its a lovelorn girl in her bedroom. Every month the locales live in terror wondering which one of them will be next. For ten year old Marty Coslaw the worst comes when the fourth of July is canceled because of the terror that’s come to Tarker’s Mills. Bound to a wheelchair since birth Marty loves nothing more than the Fourth of July fireworks, and them being cancelled is the last straw. Thankfully his uncle comes thru with a secret stash of fireworks for Marty. But while Marty sneaks out at night to enjoy his uncle’s gift something is watching him. Ready to make him the next victim.
My Thoughts:
I was hoping to able to curl up with a good old fashion werewolf tale. But found to be wanting with this one. It was very short, I know it was purposefully written this way just highlighting the time of the month when the moon is full but this left little time for character development. I thought we would have that when the character of Marty was introduced. He gets the most development but it is not much. At first it was interesting wondering who in this town was the werewolf and once we found out I was hoping to get more on the werewolf legend. How did he become cursed? Are there more of them in the world? But the story is too short and we get none of that.

I would love to get a full fledge werewolf story from Mr. King in the future but that seems unlikely. One of the high points of the story are the illustrations by the legendary Bernie Wrightson. Bernie had a flair for the weird and horror making his illustrations scary and beautiful at the same time. Each chapter would open up with a two page black and white drawing usually setting up the season that the story takes place, then one gorgeous fully painted illustration highlighting the climax of the chapter. And then a small black and white closing illustration at the end of the chapter. While I was a little disappointed in the story the price of the book is worth it for the Wrightson artwork alone. On a side note there was a movie adaptation in 1985 called Silver Bullet starring Corey Haim and Gary Busey. I haven’t seen it in a long time but I do remember it being pretty good.

I love books about werewolves, I love Stephen King, but this was a waste of time. It’s a glorified short story padded with full page illustrations (which are awesome) and lots of blank pages. There’s little to no story here. Half the chapters are just “Hi. I’m a character you’re never gonna see again. Here’s a paper-thin characterization. What’s that outside? Oh crap, a wolf person. I’m dead.” Next chapter.

So much of it is just the small-town set up King does in his full novels, but in those it works because you care about the characters, and here you don’t get to know anyone long enough to care.

Even with a kid in a wheelchair in mortal danger, there’s no suspense whatsoever. And they put a lot of the pictures in ahead of what they reference in the text, so you know what’s gonna happen before it does. No surprises at all.

There were also way too many typos in such a short book. It seems like the only person who cared here was the illustrator.

I noticed all the quotes on the book were about King as a writer; none were about this book itself. Very telling. And I’ve never seen a book that was made into a movie not mention that somewhere, but this one didn’t, probably because Silver Bullet didn’t do well.
