If you’re already a fan of Diane Capri, probably best known for her “The Hunt For Jack Reacher” series, then you already know she writes taut, fast-paced thrillers that are hard to put down. (In fact, good luck even trying.) And now, here with “Blood Trails,” she launches a series with heir hunter Michael Flint that I think might likely rival or even exceed her Reacher series.
In “Blood Trails,” Flint is a tough, experienced former covert agent whose client is keen on finding a woman named Laura Oakwood who could lose some $50 million in mineral royalties. Problem is, Flint needs to find her within 72 hours—and Oakwood is in the wind and probably not even aware she has money coming. There’s a reason for that: Oakwood has been on the run from the law for decades after a deadly armed robbery nearly 30 years earlier. Worse? There’s another tycoon who’s competing with Flint’s client to find Oakwood, too. Thus far, no one has been able to find her, or even a hint of where she might be holed up.
Flint doesn’t necessarily operate exclusively on his own. When he needs to, he’ll reach out to people, some with dubious pasts, who can help expedite his work. He works with the often ill-tempered Katie Scarlett, a woman who lived in the same foster care home that Shaw did as a child. Scarlett is an investigator now, taking on only rich clients and though she’s very good at what she does, she reaches out to Flint when time is short and she needs someone to do the impossible: Find missing people.
Capri knows how to push all the right buttons with wonderfully drawn characters, loads of action (for me, the most memorable being a near-disastrous helicopter ride), and unexpected events you won’t see coming.
Sure, we’ve all read great cop stories. We’ve all read terrific private detective novels. But the author ups the stakes with a new twist through Michael Flint and you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you pass on this most excellent new character in a fresh series. I won’t spoil the ending, but wait — why are you even still here? Go get the book and the breath of fresh, exciting air that whistles through every scene.
