All This Could Be Different Pdf Summary

Graduating into the long maw of an American recession, Sneha is one of the fortunate ones. She’s moved to Milwaukee for an entry-level corporate job that, gruelling as it may be, is the key that unlocks every door: she can pick up the tab at dinner with her new friend Tig, get her college buddy Thom hired alongside her, and send money to her parents back in India. She begins dating women–soon developing a burning crush on Marina, a beguiling and beautiful dancer who always seems just out of reach.

But before long, trouble arrives. Painful secrets rear their heads; jobs go off the rails; evictions loom. Sneha struggles to be truly close and open with anybody, even as her friendships deepen, even as she throws herself headlong into a dizzying romance with Marina. It’s then that Tig begins to draw up a radical solution to their problems, hoping to save them all.

I loved this book and am glad that some reviews of it on here put it on my radar! Everything about this novel felt like such a real and emotional portrayal of young adulthood. I was so invested in this book and read at least the last 100 pages in a single sitting outside on my deck at night.

One of the best things about this book was how honest everything felt. Sneha had flaws, but was also lovable. She made plenty of mistakes during this story, but they all seemed like very understandable and human mistakes. I think this novel is perfect for anyone who loves character-driven novels centered around flawed characters that are written in a way that causes the reader to still deeply care about them. I cannot speak to Sneha’s portrayal as an immigrant to the US, as that is not my experience, but I have seen positive reviews about this aspect of the story. Some of Sneha’s struggles at her job relate to how much she needs this job to be eventually sponsored to become a citizen.

Much of this story was about Sneha’s relationships with her friends and romantic relationships. All of these characters were developed well. She has a friend from college, Thom, who ends up working with her. She meets Tig in Milwaukee and this friendship is one of the best relationships in the novel, but even it is not without occasional bumps in the road. We also see Sneha’s complicated romance with a dancer, Marina. There were a lot of lovely things in the book about the challenges of Sneha navigating this relationship and how to admit her real feelings.

I thought the writing in this book was really beautiful, while still being a very accessible novel. Mathews does not use quotation marks and I still found all the dialogue easy to follow but if that is something that bothers you in books, that may be something to be aware of before reading.

This was such a lovely book and I will be thinking about it for a while! I expect this to end up as one of my favorites this year. Let me know your thoughts if you’ve read this!

I only learned of the book because the author was once an undergrad in my Ed policy course. I’m lucky I saw her mention it on IG one day… because I just finished the last page of one of the best novels I’ve ever read. Immediately wanting to start again.

Sarah’s created an extraordinary life of characters we will all want to know and keep knowing. She’s opened windows into experiences of love, lust, fight, hope, pain that I never would’ve seen. She’s respected- deeply- a city too often overlooked and put another – too often written- in its place. She offers escape and reality exactly at a time we need it most.

Move this book to the top of your list. Don’t worry about having enough time to read it or whether you’ll relate. You will. I promise.

This new novel has gotten a lot of attention, and rightfully so. The voice is compelling; the representations of its characters refreshingly complex and diverse. Themes of class, capitalism, desire, queerness, and friendship are explored in a style that is page-turning, funny, and heart-warming. I missed hanging out with this group of friends once I was finished, and find I continue to think of them.

A favorite quote: “This is what my parents wanted for me, what everybody wanted. To be a dish laid out before a man’s hunger. To be taken, to be quiet. Disappear into hair and parts. Disappear, in time, into marriage and motherhood.”
